[06-12-2019] 2 Killed in Commercial Box Truck Accident on 71 South Freeway

At least two individuals were killed in a pileup involving a box truck and five other vehicles on the southbound 71 Freeway at Butterfield Ranch Road in Chino Hills Wednesday.

The chain reaction crash at about 8:15 a.m. started with a box truck that may not or simply did not slow down as traffic slowed in front of him on the southbound 71 Freeway at Butterfield Ranch Road. From the initial investigation, authorities say the truck first hit one car and pushed it out of the way, then hit a second car, killing two individuals inside and seriously injuring a 15-year-old.

It appeared several vehicles were mangled in the collision, including the car crushed by the big rig.

Two women in a white Honda Accord were killed in the crash involving a commercial truck, said CHP Officer Joseph Corney.

Five others have been injured and taken to local hospitals, ” he said. Their conditions weren’t immediately known. The Honda Accord was not the car that finished up beneath the box truck, Corney added.

The accident left all southbound lanes blocked during the rush-hour sail, and traffic was at a standstill in the area for most of the morning. All southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 1 p.m., the report stated.

Drivers familiar with the area know that the 71 Freeway loses lanes as it moves south from Los Angeles County into San Bernardino County. It’s not clear if a slowdown because of the reduction of lanes is what resulted in the car crash.

Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Pine, and the southbound lanes were closed down at Butterfield Ranch Road for several hours.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Our deepest condolences to the victims of this accident.
