Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of car accidents. When compared to other types of car accidents, a head-on crash has a much greater impact force.

In a head-on collision, the force of impact is influenced by the vehicles’ speed and weight. During head-on collisions, much energy is released—the more powerful the weapon, the more lethal the wounds.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, frontal impact crashes killed occupants of motor vehicles at a rate of 58% in 2017. In rural areas, it is more likely that a head-on collision will occur.

Thirteen percent of all fatal crashes in rural areas involve head-on collisions. There are only a few head-on collisions in urban areas, which account for less than 7 percent of all fatal accidents. Accidents caused by intoxication, distraction, inexperience, and mechanical failure can all lead to head-on collisions.
