Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Statistics

The economy heavily relies on the semi-truck industry to transport goods across the country. Every year, the trucking business in the United States transports billions of dollars worth of commodities. Unfortunately, the presence of so many big rigs on the road puts other motorists in danger.

When compared to other forms of car accidents, semi-truck collisions are more deadly. It’s primarily because big rig trucks are significantly larger than most other vehicles on the road. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, the fatality rate for large rig vehicles has climbed by 30 percent since 2009. In 2017, there were 4,102 fatal traffic accidents involving a big rig.

Semi-truck accidents claimed the lives of 4,119 people this year. Fifteen percent were truck drivers and passengers; six percent were passengers in autos and other passenger vehicles; fifteen percent were pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. Tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling mechanical malfunction, excessive speed, lane drifting, and driver exhaustion contributes to semi-truck accidents.
