[09-19-2019] Drunk Driver Abandons Injured Bicyclist in Baldwin Park Hit & Run DUI Crash

On September 19th, 2019, Joseph Mares was out riding his bicycle when, at the intersections of Stewart Avenue and Olive Street, he saw Josue Lugo’s silver Toyota speeding towards him. Mares attempt to swerve out of the way failed, and Lugo’s Toyota struck him.

At the scene, Lugo was arrested for driving under the influence.

A witness confirmed that Lugo failed to stop at a stop sign causing him to crash into Mares. He added that after the collision, Lugo stopped, then swerved around Mares, who was lying on the ground injured and continued to drive away from the scene of the accident without stopping to check on Mares’ well-being.

A Baldwin Park Police Officer on routine patrol also saw the incident and Lugo’s attempt to flee the scene. The BPPD officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop on Lugo. The police officer stated, “Lugo traveled about 357 feet away from the crash, passing several free curbside parking then came to a stop only after I activated my units emergency lights.”

The collision was so strong it caused Mares to be ejected from his bicycle, be-thrown in the air, and fall traumatically onto the street. Mares was ambulated to the Queen of the Valley Hospital with possible injuries to his neck, back, and legs.
