Two bicyclists sustained significant injuries after an auto-bicycle traffic accident at an intersection in Fresno County on Tuesday evening, June 9th.
According to the initial information from the California Highway Patrol, the bicycle accident occurred at around 6:20 p.m. The cyclists were traveling together on N Friant Road and Millerton Road when a Honda Civic headed westbound lost control and struck the pair of cyclists.
Both of the bicyclists sustained significant injuries. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.
The reason why the Hona Civic lost control is unknown. Local authorities do not consider drugs or alcohol as a factor in the accident, but speeding or distracted driving may have played a role.
Bicycle Accident Investigation is Underway
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the accident.
Although a variety of laws now protects bicyclists in the U.S., bicycle accidents are still an inevitable occurrence. In 2018, approximately 800 bicyclists in the U.S. were killed with California leading the nation in the most number of bicycle crash deaths annually.
Bicycle crashes often happen in urban areas, where cars and bicycles interact the most. Cars hitting bikes is the leading cause of bicyclist injuries and deaths throughout the state. Common reasons for this are drivers failing to yield the right of way, running a stop sign or red light, or not paying attention enough on the road and texting while driving. Drunk driving and careless driving can also lead to a fatal bicycle collision. Although motorists would often escape unharmed, the bicyclists suffer the most from these types of accidents as they can sustain significant injuries or even potentially die.
When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Fresno personal injury attorney specializing in bicycle accidents to conduct an independent investigation. Attorneys have the resources to help prove the negligence of the liable party. All contributing factors, such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting, should be considered and thoroughly examined.
