Update: The 18-year-old Concord High School senior has died from injuries suffered after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver Monday night, officials said.
A young man named Joe Barrett is currently in critical condition after being hit by a hit-and-run driver last February 10. It happened in the Port Chicago Highway on-ramp to eastbound Highway 4. Barrett, who is just 18 years old, was just getting off the bus after visiting a local library until he was suddenly struck by a negligent driver. Authorities immediately came to Barrett’s aid and transported him to John Muir Hospital, where he is currently being treated for his life-threatening injuries.
Hit-and-run Accident Investigation Needed
Fortunately, authorities now have a possible lead as to who the driver was. The negligent driver will be apprehended and will face criminal charges especially after fleeing the scene.
For cases like this, it is important to conduct a private investigation immediately in order to preserve the evidence. The key evidence will benefit the victim greatly if the process starts as early as possible. Having an attorney can make things easier as well as they have the ability to interview expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks and review applicable insurance coverage. Going through these procedures is vital in helping the victims receive the justice that they deserve.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 6,227 pedestrians were killed in the U.S. in 2018 which was a 250 increase from the previous year. A possible factor for the rise in these pedestrian-related accidents would be smartphones, as drivers get more distracted and lose their focus on the road.
It is the driver’s responsibility to look out for pedestrians regardless of whether a pedestrian is crossing a marked crosswalk or not, as they always possess the “right of way”.
Contra Costa County Personal Injury Attorney for Hit and Run Victims
While the investigation is on-going, Barrett is entitled to a personal injury claim. He has the right to ask for compensation for the damages the driver cost him, such as medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. Victims of these accidents may undergo extreme stress and pain, which is why it is important to have their rights protected. A seasoned attorney will make the process easier as they will always stay updated with the progress of the official investigation and make sure that the legal rights and best interests of their clients are prioritized.
