An 84-year-old Calexico man was killed after a fatal wrong-way head-on collision on Highway 98 on Monday morning, May 3.
The deadly collision occurred before noon on Highway 98, just east of Holdridge Road.
The Calexico was driving his Pontiac eastbound when, for unclear reasons, it drifted onto the westbound lanes and went directly into the path of an oncomingLincoln.
Both drivers tried their best to avoid the collision, but unfortunately, the Lincoln and the Pontiac inevitably collided head-on. The Calexico man sustained life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
A female passenger in Lincoln seriously hurt her right leg as a result of the crash. She was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The California Highway Patrol is further investigating the case. They will attempt to determine the factors that caused the accident and the liability.
Fatal Wrong-Way Collision Statistics
Every year, approximately 355 people are killed in the U.S. due to wrong-way drivers. With the average number of wrong-way collision deaths at 265, 1.34 fatalities per wrong-way death are calculated. Head-on crashes at intersections occur when drivers disregard traffic laws and signals, such as red lights, stop signs, or yield signs.
Sadly, not all victims will be able to survive a head-on crash. Surviving family members have the right to sue a negligent driver for wrongful death after a fatal head-on collision. These accidents are caused by various reasons, such as distracted driving, drunk driving, and driver over-fatigue.
