An unidentified man from West Covina was killed after a hit-and-run driver struck him in Bakersfield on early Monday morning, March 8.
The accident took place on Northbound 99 at Ming Avenue in Bakersfield at approximately 1:00 a.m.
The victim was found unresponsive by emergency personnel in the median. It was suspected that he was struck by an unspecified vehicle in the northbound lanes of SR 99.
The driver that struck the victim did not stop to render aid and fled the scene. The victim was unfortunately later pronounced dead at the scene.
Drugs and alcohol were not considered as factors in the fatal accident.
The California Highway Patrol is further investigating the case. They will also pursue the hit-and-run driver and apprehend him.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident
Pedestrian accidents often lead to severe injury and even death. This is because pedestrians do not have protection against fatal accidents, unlike passengers of private vehicles and motorcycle riders.
Common injuries resulting from pedestrian accidents are head trauma like concussions or brain bleeds, traumatic brain injuries, and many other debilitating injuries. Many pedestrian accident injuries can result in either functional impairments or long-term conditions.
Unfortunately, pedestrians make up a large percentage of traffic fatalities in the past 33 years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 27 percent from 2007-2016, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14 percent.
It is apparent in this case that the liability falls on the hit-and-run driver for leaving the victim wounded and fleeing the scene. The suspect will most likely face criminal charges once caught.
Unfortunately, around one in five pedestrian accidents are caused by hit-and-run drivers. Sixty percent of people killed in hit-and-run accidents are pedestrians. Common reasons why hit-and-run drivers flee the scene are intoxication, driving without a license, and fear of getting arrested if they remain.
Wrongful Death Attorney For Victims Of Fatal Pedestrian Accidents In Kern County
The sudden death of a loved one can be quite devastating for the victim’s family. It may leave them vulnerable to manipulation by both insurance companies and other parties. To avoid this, it is necessary to have an attorney by your side to fight for your rights.
Pending the official investigation results, the victim’s family is encouraged to pursue a wrongful death claim with their attorney’s help. Through the wrongful death claim, the victim’s family can seek compensation for the damages (such as loss of income and companionship, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress) that the fatal accident has caused them.
