Two people were killed after a three-vehicle traffic collision on Interstate 5 in Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon, August 16.

[08-16-2020] Kern County, CA - Two People Killed in a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in BakersfieldThe fatal collision took place on northbound I-5 near State Route 166 at around 3:00 p.m. A Ford 150 pickup truck was traveling south on I-5, the driver noticed that there was debris in the fast lane and attempted to avoid it. The Ford pickup truck driver then lost control of his vehicle and veered on the northbound lanes, causing him to collide with a Honda SUV and another semi-truck.

Due to the severity of the impact, the SUV flipped and veered off into the right side of the road. A total of four people, including the driver of the pickup truck, was hurt while two fatalities were reported as a result of the accident. All of the injured people were taken to an area hospital to receive treatment. Two passengers from the Honda were killed in the crash. They were identified as Matilde Saavedra, 56, and Courtney Louisville, who was only 15 years old. Drugs and alcohol were not considered as factors.

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the collision.
