A 59-year-old Clearlake resident identified as Curtis Knight was killed after getting struck by a hit-and-run driver in Lower Lake on Thursday morning, October 16.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s initial reports, the accident happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Highway 29, just south of Orchard Street. The victim was attempting to cross the road from the west side of the road at Power Mart towards the east side when he was suddenly struck by a passing vehicle.
He was hit in the number 2 northbound lane of Highway 53. The driver that struck the pedestrian fled the scene. Paramedics found the victim unconscious while lying on the side of the roadway. The victim was immediately taken to Adventist Health Clear Lake Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not released any information about the driver’s description and his vehicle.
Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are actively pursuing the hit-and-run driver. Witnesses that can give helpful information about the suspect’s whereabouts are encouraged to call the authorities at 707-279-0103. It is apparent in this case that the liability falls on the hit-and-run driver for leaving the victim wounded and fleeing the scene. The suspect will most likely face criminal charges once caught.
Unfortunately, around one in five pedestrian accidents are caused by hit-and-run drivers. Sixty percent of people killed in hit-and-run accidents are pedestrians. Common reasons why hit-and-run drivers flee the scene are intoxication, driving without a license, and fear of getting arrested if they remained at the scene.
When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Lake County wrongful death attorney specializing in fatal hit-and-run pedestrian accidents to conduct an independent investigation. Attorneys have the resources to help prove the negligence of the liable party. All contributing factors, such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting, should be considered and thoroughly examined.
