The accident occurred at around 10:51 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway at Wilmington Avenue.
The victim was reportedly driving a compact SUV on the freeway when, for unexplained reasons, she collided with an oncoming big rig before crashing into a wall and overturning it.
The circumstances leading up to the collision have not been established. Mendoza was killed as a result of the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The big rig driver was unhurt from the accident. He remained at the scene and cooperated with local authorities.
Fatal Big Rig Collision Investigation is Underway
Big rig accidents often lead to catastrophic and fatal outcomes. Big rig accidents are more devastating than other traffic accidents due to their considerable size. A fully loaded big rig needs as much as 20 to 40 percent more stopping distance.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), big rig trucks have increased by 30 percent since 2009. There were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a big rig in 2017 alone.
Some common reasons why big rig accidents occur are loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
When facing tractor-trailer crash cases like this, it’s essential to have an experienced Los Angeles County wrongful death attorney specializing in big rig accidents to conduct an independent investigation.
During the independent investigation, all possible contributing factors such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting will be considered and thoroughly examined by the wrongful death attorney.
