A 65-year-old woman identified as Veronica Rojas was killed after getting struck by a vehicle fleeing from the police in Palmdale on Wednesday evening, June 24th.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the fatal accident happened at around 7:50 p.m. the older woman was walking her dog on a cemented path near East Avenue S and Sierra Highway when an SUV suddenly struck her.
The SUV that struck the woman initially traveling at high speed on Avenue S when it crossed the sidewalk that separates the four-lane road from the bike path. It then eventually struck the victim, and continued up a grassy berm and bumped into a brick wall bordering the Boulders mobile home park.

Fatal Police Chase Crash Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are currently investigating the case further. It is apparent in this case that the liability falls on the driver of the van as they actively avoided the police, and eventually struck an innocent a pedestrian.
When a motorist gets pulled over by a police officer, the driver’s are always obligated to comply. Failure to comply may lead to criminal charges. Pedestrians are more vulnerable to the dangers on the road in comparison to passengers in a private vehicle. Passengers of private cars are protected by seatbelts and airbags, which can decrease the fatality rate of an accident while pedestrians are not as protected from the dangers on the road.
Pedestrians currently make up a large percentage of traffic fatalities in the past 33 years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 27 percent from 2007-2016 while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14 percent.
