An unidentified older man on a scooter was seriously hurt after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Boyle Heights on Friday morning, December 4.
The accident transpired at approximately 10:35 a.m on Mott Street at Whittier Boulevard in Boyle Heights.
The older man was attempting to cross the street using his electric scooter when a compact SUV suddenly hit him. The SUV dragged the pedestrian for half a block before the driver stopped. A witness helped remove the scooter from the vehicle while the SUV was parked.
After the scooter was freed, the involved driver fled the scene. Police suspect that the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was a Mazda CX-5. The older man sustained severe injuries from the crash. He was rushed to an area hospital for treatment.
Witnesses that can provide additional information about the accident are urged to contact the Los Angeles Police Department at 213-626-LAPD.
Hit-and-Run Accident Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are currently investigating the case. They are actively pursuing the hit-and-run driver. It is apparent in this case that the liability falls on the hit-and-run driver for leaving the victim wounded and fleeing the scene. The suspect will most likely face criminal charges once caught.
Unfortunately, around one in five pedestrian accidents are caused by hit-and-run drivers. Sixty percent of people killed in hit-and-run accidents are pedestrians. Common reasons why hit-and-run drivers flee the scene are intoxication, driving without a license, and fear of getting arrested if they remain.
Electric scooters have gained popularity in California over the past few years. Because electric scooters have become a good travel alternative, they are inexpensive and convenient to use. However, electric scooter accidents are also becoming a growing concern. Electric scooter accidents can lead to severe injuries such as dislocations, bone fractures, lung contusions, soft-tissue injuries, and a splenic laceration.
When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney conduct an independent investigation. Attorneys have the resources that can help them prove the negligence of the liable party. They can re-interview important witnesses, review relevant surveillance footage from the scene, and obtain the responsible party’s phone and texting records.
Los Angeles Personal Injury Attorney for Victims of Hit-and-Run Scooter Accidents
The sudden death of a loved one can be quite devastating for the victim’s family. It may leave them vulnerable to manipulation by both insurance companies and other parties. To avoid this, it is necessary to have an attorney by your side to fight for your rights.
Pending the official investigation results, the victim’s family is encouraged to pursue a wrongful death claim with their attorney’s help. Through the wrongful death claim, the victim’s family can seek compensation for the damages (such as loss of income and companionship, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress) that the fatal hit-and-run accident has caused them.
Attorneys can serve as a compassionate, helpful legal guide during this difficult time for the grieving family. They will vigorously fight for their client’s rights and best interests while ensuring that the liable party will be held accountable for their negligence. Attorneys can also negotiate with insurance companies on behalf of their clients to ensure they are compensated fairly.
