[06-18-2020] Los Angeles, CA – Motorcyclist Killed After Getting Struck by an SUV at Silver Lake Boulevard

A 68-year-old man identified as Timothy Stirton was killed after a fatal motorcycle accident in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles on Thursday morning, June 18th.

Effie StreetAccording to the initial reports from local authorities, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred at around 10:35 a.m. The victim was riding his motorized scooter when he was suddenly hit by a speeding SUV Ford Explorer at Silver Lake Boulevard and Effie Street.

The driver of the SUV was identified as a 70-year-old woman. The woman told the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) that she attempted to slow down before striking the victim, but her vehicle started to accelerate instead.

The driver drove on the wrong side of the street in an attempt to avoid rear-ending another vehicle, then got back on the right side of the road and ran a red light, hitting Stirton’s motor scooter in the process. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the driver of the SUV and the victim were both injured in the crash.

Fatal Crash Investigation is Underway

The LAPD is now attempting to determine the cause of the accident through the official investigation.

According to the data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 16 times more at risk of injury and 35 times more at risk of facing fatal crashes in comparison to a passenger of a private vehicle. This is because motorcycle riders are less protected from the dangers on the road in comparison with a passenger of a private car. Motorcycle riders are also at greater risk of sustaining fatal injuries that could lead to paralysis and death.

All riders are required by law (in most states) to wear a helmet and are encouraged to dress appropriately during their motorcycles. It is proven that helmets are 37% effective in preventing motorcycle deaths. Distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to observe traffic laws are just some of the common factors why motorcycle accidents occur.

When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Los Angeles wrongful death attorney specializing in motorcycle accidents to conduct an independent probe. Attorneys can utilize their resources to re-interview important witnesses, review relevant surveillance footage from the scene, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party.
