A fatal hit-and-run crash in La Verne, Los Angeles, resulted in one man’s death on Monday evening, September 14. The victim was identified as 40-year-old La Habra resident Christoper Herrera.
The accident took place in the eastbound lanes of the Foothill (210) Freeway, just east of Fruit Street at approximately 9:00 p.m. The victim exited his tow truck to assist a disabled driver on the freeway’s right shoulder when a 2012 BMW 528i suddenly struck him for unknown reasons.
The BMW driver was identified as Karen D. Floresarrelano; she was initially traveling eastbound in the No.3 lane on Foothill (210) Freeway when she veered off the roadway and hit the victim. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was determined to be under the influence of alcohol during the accident. She was eventually arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of DUI.
Hit-and-Run Accident Investigation is Underway
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash further. It is apparent in this case that the liability will fall on Arreguy as he not only attempted to drive while he was under the influence of alcohol, but he also fled the scene and left the victim, which is a crime in itself.
Fleeing from the accident is a crime in itself. Unfortunately, around 11 percent of all crash cases involve a hit-and-run driver. Hit-and-run drivers would often leave the scene due to intoxication, driving without a license, or fear of being arrested if they remained at the scene. Drunk driving is one of the most reckless and dangerous things a driver can do. Unfortunately, approximately 300,000 people are injured each year in the U.S. due to drunk driving accidents.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 10,000 people are killed annually due to DUI accidents. According to the information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, around 18% of all fatal motor accidents involve drugs and alcohol.
