A female pedestrian identified as Josephine Espiritu was killed due to a street racing accident in Long Beach on Monday evening, May 11th.

According to the initial reports from local authorities, the fatal accident occurred at around 6:40 p.m. The woman was walking on Santa Fe Avenue and Hill Stree when she was suddenly struck by a Lexus driving at a high speed.

The Lexus was speeding with a Nissan sports car on the southbound lanes of Santa Fe. The Lexus ran a red light at Hill then struck a 2003 Honda Odyssey traveling eastbound on that roadway. The Lexus spun out of control then struck a female pedestrian that was walking on a marked crosswalk.

The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda sustained minor injuries from the accident. The driver of the Lexus is currently recovering in a hospital but is now facing criminal charges. The police are now pursuing the other vehicle that was allegedly street racing with the Lexus.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation is Underway

Local authorities are currently investigating the case further. It’s apparent that the liability in this fatal accident falls on the driver of the Lexus as he was allegedly involved in street racing which resulted in the death of an innocent pedestrian.

Pedestrians are more susceptible to the dangers on the road in comparison with passengers in a private vehicle. Pedestrian fatalities are rising at an alarming rate over recent years. The percentage of pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. has increased at a whopping 41 percent since 2008, which accounts for 16 percent of all traffic fatalities. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, around 6,227 pedestrians were killed in the U.S. in 2018, which was a 250 increase from the previous year. Common causes of pedestrian accidents are reckless driving, road rage, drunk driving, distracted driving, speeding, and erratic lane changes.

When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Los Angeles accident attorney specializing in fatal pedestrian accidents to conduct an independent probe. Attorneys have the resources to interview essential witnesses, review related surveillance footage from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. All possible contributing factors, such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting, must be considered and thoroughly examined during the independent investigation. Regardless of whether the victim was walking on a marked crosswalk or not, it is always the driver’s responsibility to yield any incoming pedestrians in his way.
