Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents frequently result in serious injuries or even death for the innocent victim. Unlike passengers in private vehicles and motorcycle riders, this is because pedestrians are not protected from fatal accidents.

Pedestrian fatalities make up a considerable percentage of traffic fatalities in the past 33 years across the country. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% between 2007 and 2016, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%/

Pedestrian accidents occur for a variety of reasons in densely populated areas like Los Angeles. Oncoming motorists may not see a pedestrian who steps out from behind a parked car or truck, putting them in danger of a collision. Other times, children can dart out in front of a moving vehicle without being seen.

134 pedestrians were killed by cars in Los Angeles in 2019. That equates to about one death every two and a half days. The number of pedestrian deaths rose from 87 in 2014 to 174 in 2018, an increase of nearly 55% in just five years. Every year, motorists cause the deaths or serious injuries of hundreds of more pedestrians.
