Fatal Big Rig Crash Statistics
When compared to other forms of traffic accidents, big rigs are far more deadly. It’s mainly because big rig trucks are so much larger than regular automobiles. A fully loaded big rig needs as much as 20 to 40 percent more stopping distance.
California’s economy cannot function without heavy trucks. Big rigs are the primary means of freight transportation in California, according to the state’s Department of Transportation. More than 78% of Californians rely only on large trucks to transport their goods. Accidents involving huge rigs have sadly increased in recent years.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, the number of fatalities involving large rig vehicles has grown by 30% since 2009. In 2017, there were 4,102 fatal traffic accidents involving a big rig. Semi-truck accidents are caused by various reasons, including loss of control, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle malfunction, excessive speed, lane drifting, and inappropriate truck maneuver driver tiredness.
