A 16-year-old boy was killed after a deadly pedestrian crash in Long Beach on Saturday evening, September 4.
The crash took place at the intersection of Los Coyotes Diagonal and Deborah Street in Long Beach at approximately 9:07 p.m.
The 16-year-old boy reportedly attempted to cross the street on a marked crosswalk when a southbound 2001 Chevrolet Tracker struck him on Los Coyotes Diagonal.
Paramedics later arrived at the scene and performed life-saving measures on the boy. Unfortunately, the teen later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been disclosed.
Kevin Chris D., 33, was later identified as the motorist who struck the boy and was charged with one count of gross vehicular manslaughter and one count of driving under the influence. The amount of his bail was set at $100,000.
Local authorities are further investigating the accident. Witnesses that can give more information about the crash are encouraged to call the Long Beach police at 562-570-7355.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents are among the most deadly types of traffic accidents. This is primarily because pedestrians are extremely vulnerable to road hazards. After all, they have no protection in the event of an accident.
In the United States in 2017, 5,977 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents. That equates to one death every 88 minutes. In addition, an estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms in 2017 for nonfatal crash-related injuries.
According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association’s most recent pedestrian accident statistics, Los Angeles is the most dangerous county in the United States, let alone California, for pedestrians. Los Angeles had twice the number of pedestrian deaths as the next two counties, Maricopa County in Arizona and Harris County in Texas.
This is not surprising given that Los Angeles has some of the worst traffic conditions in the country, with some of the most congested roadways, archaic infrastructure, little to no pedestrian access in some places, and a public transportation system used by very few people.
