A woman was killed after a crash on a Sunday morning in the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles, October 3.
The crash occurred a little after 5 a.m. on the eastbound freeway, just west of Santa Fe Avenue.
Initially, there was a single-car collision, leaving a vehicle disabled in the traffic lanes. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
A second eastbound vehicle, a 2006 BMW 328i, hit the disabled vehicle moments later.
The driver of the BMW, a 51-year-old man from El Monte, was sent to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center with grave injuries as a result of the impact.
His passenger, a Baldwin Park woman, was transferred to the same hospital and died as a result of her injuries.
Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Every year the lives of approximately 1.3 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.
In car-to-car side impacts the fatality risk for car occupants is 85% at 65 km/h. Although motor-vehicle-related deaths occur more often in collisions between motor vehicles than any other type of incident, crashes of this type represented less than half of the total in 2019 (43%).
Collisions between a motor vehicle and a fixed object were the next most common type, with over 26% of deaths, followed by pedestrian incidents and non-collisions (rollovers, etc.). While collisions between motor vehicles accounted for less than half of motor-vehicle fatalities, this crash type represented 79% of injuries, 74% of injury crashes, and 72% of all incidents.
