Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle accidents almost always cause more harm to the motorcycle rider than the other parties involved. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics, motorcycle riders have 16 times the risk of injury and 35 times the risk of a fatal crash compared to car passengers. The NHTSA also reports that approximately 5,286 motorcyclists were killed in the U.S. in 2016.
Unfortunately, California isn’t a safe place for motorcycle riders. California has one of the most significant registered motorcycles in the U.S. There are over 800,000 registered motorcycles in California. In 2017, 16,505 motorcycle accidents occurred on California roadways, which resulted in 15,527 injuries and 541 deaths. Helmets are effective in preventing severe head injuries. Helmets are estimated to be 37% effective in preventing motorcycle fatalities. The rest of their bodies, however, may still be vulnerable.
