[10-14-2020] Mendocino County, CA – One Person Killed, Two People Injured After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Willits

A Santa Rosa man was killed while two others were injured after a fatal multi-vehicle traffic collision in Willits on Wednesday evening, October 14.

Highway 101 in WillitsAccording to the California Highway Patrol’s initial reports, the fatal collision happened at around 5:45 p.m. on Highway 101 near the Willits bypass.

The Santa Rosa man was driving his 2004 Chevrolet northbound on Highway 101 when, for unexplained reasons, he crossed the double yellow lines. He then collided head-on with a 2012 Toyota.

Due to the severity of the impact, the Chevrolet was pushed into the path of a northbound 2011 Kenworth semi-truck. The Chevrolet driver was killed in the collision.

Two occupants of the Toyota, the driver and his 8-year-old passenger, sustained severe injuries from the crash. They were both initially taken to Howard Memorial in Willits. The Toyota driver was later airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial while the juvenile occupant was flown to Oakland Children’s Hospital. The semi-truck driver was unharmed. It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash.

Multi-Vehicle Collision Investigation is Underway

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accident. They will attempt to determine the factors that caused the collision and liability.

When three or more cars collide on the roadway, it is considered a multi-vehicle collision. This type of car accident is commonly caused by a “chain reaction,” when one car bumps into another, which causes the other to hit the next vehicle.

Multi-vehicle collisions are commonly caused by drunk driving, speeding, and distracted driving. It can be quite challenging to pinpoint liability during a multi-vehicle collision investigation, which is why it is essential to hire an experienced Mendocino County wrongful death attorney to conduct an independent investigation.

Attorneys can re-interview important witnesses, review relevant surveillance footage from the scene, and obtain the responsible party’s phone and texting records.
