Stevenson was riding a Triumph motorcycle westbound on Ashby road when he was suddenly struck by a white 1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude. The Honda driver was initially traveling southbound on Beachwood but failed to stop at a posted stop sign.

The rider was ejected from his motorcycle due to the severity of the impact. Stevenson sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash. He was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.

The Honda driver did not stop to render aid and fled the scene. His front bumper was detached after colliding with the motorcyclist. A passenger of the Honda later returned so they could pick up the car’s bumper.

The passenger was described as a heavyset adult male with short shaved hair. Authorities are still pursuing the Honda driver and its passenger. Witnesses that can provide more information about the suspect’s whereabouts are encouraged to contact the Merced CHP Area Office at 209-356-6600.

Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Accident Investigation is Underway

Local authorities are currently investigating the case further. Leaving the scene of the accident is a crime in itself. The hit-and-run driver will most likely face hit-and-run charges as well once the authorities apprehend him.

Riding motorcycles is more dangerous than riding a private vehicle. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, motorcycle riders are 16 times more at risk of injury and 35 times more at risk of facing fatal crashes in comparison to a passenger of a private vehicle.

Some of the common factors why motorcycle accidents occur are distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to observe traffic laws. All riders are required by law (in most states) to wear a helmet and are encouraged to dress appropriately when riding their motorcycles. It is proven that helmets are 37% effective in preventing motorcycle deaths.

When facing fatal motorcycle accident cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced Merced County personal injury attorney specializing in fatal motorcycle accidents to conduct an independent probe. Attorneys have the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, and review applicable insurance coverage for their clients. All possible contributing factors, such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting, must be considered and thoroughly examined during the independent investigation.
