One person was killed while two others were hurt after a fatal bicycle crash in Riverside on Monday night, July 6th.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the deadly accident occurred at around 10:25 p.m. The victim reportedly attempted to cross the four-lane corridor from the northbound to southbound lanes when his bicycle went directly in front of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The driver of the Harley Davidson motorcycle was identified as a 54-year-old man from Corona. The motorcyclist was heading westbound on Magnolia Avenue when he suddenly crashed into the cyclist. The victim was ejected from his bicycle due to the severity of the impact. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcyclist and his passenger sustained injuries and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.
Fatal Bicycle Accident Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are now investigating the cause of the accident. Witnesses that can provide additional information about the accident are urged to contact the Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8720. Although various laws now protect bicyclists in the U.S., bicycle accidents are still an inevitable occurrence.
In 2018, approximately 800 bicyclists in the U.S. were killed with California leading the nation in the most number of bicycle crash deaths annually. Bicycle crashes often happen in urban areas, where cars and bicycles interact the most. Cars hitting bikes is the leading cause of bicyclist injuries and deaths throughout the state.
Common reasons for this are drivers failing to yield the right of way, running a stop sign or red light, or not paying attention enough on the road and texting while driving, drunk driving, and careless driving can also lead to a fatal bicycle collision. Although motorists would often escape unharmed, the bicyclists suffer the most from these types of accidents as they can sustain significant injuries or even potentially die.
