A 49-year-old man identified as Ricardo Rodriguez was killed after a fatal big rig traffic collision in Riverside on Thursday afternoon, September 4.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s initial reports, the deadly accident transpired on Interstate 215 at Central Avenue, just north of Box Springs Road at around 12:34 p.m. Two tractor-trailers and a Ford Expedition were involved in the collision. The three vehicles collided in the HOV and fast lane.
How the crash occurred and why it happened is currently unclear. Rodriguez, who was the sole passenger of the Ford, sustained life-threatening injuries from the crash. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Fatal Big Rig Collision Investigation is Underway
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the case. They will attempt to determine the cause of the collision and who will be liable for Rodriguez’s death.
Tractor-trailer accidents are more deadly compared to other types of road accidents. It’s mainly because of the considerable size difference of big rig trucks compared to other vehicles. A fully loaded big rig needs as much as 20 to 40 percent more stopping distance. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), big rig trucks’ fatality rate has increased by 30 percent since 2009. There were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a big rig in 2017 alone.
Tractor-trailer accidents are caused by various factors like loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue. An independent investigation handled by a professional Riverside county wrongful death attorney is essential. When investigating cases like this, it’s vital to look into all possible contributing factors such as road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting.
