Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle accidents frequently result in serious injury or death. Motorcycle riders are more likely to sustain serious injuries than passengers in private vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists were more likely than private vehicle passengers to die in traffic accidents in 2018. Around 5,286 motorcyclists were killed in the U.S. in 2017. Motorcyclist fatalities also happen 28 times more than vehicle fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
But there is a way to avoid sustaining fatal injuries in the event of a traffic accident. Motorcycle riders are encouraged to dress appropriately and wear a helmet every time they ride their motorcycle to prevent catastrophic injuries. Wearing helmets was estimated to be 37% effective in preventing motorcycle deaths. Some of the common causes of motorcycle accidents are distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to observe traffic laws.
