Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Statistics

The massive commercial trucks that weave our highways are the lifeblood of our nation’s consumer-driven economy. The trucking industry is responsible for the transportation of a large portion of goods throughout the country. As the need for consumer goods grows, the pressure to safely and properly deliver goods also increases.

The economy cannot function without semi-trucks. Every year, the trucking industry in the United States transports billions of dollars worth of goods. Many big rigs on the road, unfortunately, cause hundreds of traffic accidents. When compared to other types of car accidents, semi-truck collisions are more fatal. There are many reasons for this, but the most important is the significant size difference between big rig trucks and other vehicles on the road.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) data shows that since 2009, the fatality rate for big rig trucks has risen by 30%. In 2017, there were 4,102 fatal traffic accidents involving a big rig. Semi-truck accidents are caused by various factors, including truck loss of control, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, and improper truck maneuvering driver fatigue.
