A 57-year-old man identified as Kevin M. was killed after a deadly multi-vehicle collision on 91 Freeway on early Sunday morning, October 17.
The fatal crash transpired at approximately 4:47 a.m. in the eastbound side of the Riverside 91 Freeway, just west of Adams Street.
Several vehicles were involved in the collision. However, the number of vehicles involved and the reason the crash occurred have not been established. A car traveling in the wrong way was reportedly involved in the collision.
Authorities later arrived at the scene and found one person lying in the traffic lanes. Unfortunately, the 57-year-old man lying on the roadway was pronounced dead at the scene.
Additional information about the crash is unavailable at the moment. It’s unclear whether other people were injured in the mishap. The California Highway Patrol is further investigating the cause of the collision.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Every year, road accidents in the United States cause millions of injuries and kill tens of thousands of people. A total of 36,560 people lost their lives in car accidents last year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis System (FARS).
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 1,989 people were killed or injured in car accidents in Riverside in 2018, which was 130 lower than the previous year’s.
Speeding was a factor in 327 of the city’s car accidents in 2018, a 15-percent drop from 2017. There were also fewer accidents involving alcohol in 2018, going from 220 in 2017 to 174. But this doesn’t mean motorists should be complacent. Drivers must still practice safe driving to avoid getting involved in serious traffic accidents.
A multi-vehicle accident occurs when three or more vehicles collide on the road. Cars colliding with or with other vehicles on the road can cause “chain reaction” crashes. Fewer than 10% of all collisions every year are multi-vehicle accidents. Despite this, the NHTA reports that they are to blame for a disproportionate number of traffic-related deaths.
