Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

Millions of people are injured every year, and tens of thousands of drivers and passengers are killed in car accidents on American highways. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, 33,654 fatal car accidents occurred in 2018, resulting in 36,560 deaths.

When three or more vehicles collide on the road, this is referred to as a multi-vehicle collision. They are typically triggered by a “chain-reaction” crash, in which one vehicle hits with another, perhaps causing it to collide with other cars on the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle incidents account for less than 10% of all crashes in a given year. Yet, they result in a disproportionate number of fatalities. Traffic accidents can be life-changing and tragic. Drivers frequently fail to appreciate how dangerous automobiles may become and how easily severe and even fatal car accidents can occur since they have become so regular in our lives.
