Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident Statistics

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, but statistics indicate that approximately 11 percent of all crashes involve a hit-and-run driver. Many suspects flee the scene because they are intoxicated, driving without a license, or are concerned about being arrested if they remain.

California is a leader when it comes to hit-and-run crashes. According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in May, 2020, early estimates of traffic fatalities for 2019 show that approximately 36,120 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, a slight decrease of roughly 1.2 percent from the reported fatalities that occurred in 2018.

While this decrease is an improvement, there is still much work to be done for ensuring safety on our roadways, especially for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists. NHTSA estimates from the data coded so far into FARS for 2019 that there have been slight decreases for pedestrians (2%) and bicyclists (3%) in the U.S. as compared to 2018.
