Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, there were 36,560 people killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2018. Accidents involving multiple vehicles are rare, but the number of people injured and the amount of property damage can be staggering when they do happen.

There are more traffic collisions per year in Sacramento than in any other city in the country. For instance, in 2017, there were 61 fatal collisions in the city, resulting in the deaths of 69 people. There were numerous other collisions that year, some of which resulted in serious injuries, some of which were minor, and some were property damage.

When an accident involves three or more vehicles, it is referred to as a multi-vehicle collision. A “chain-reaction” crash usually sets it off. Because there are so many people involved in this accident, it’s going to be challenging. Drunk driving, excessive speed, and distracted driving are all common causes of these collisions.
