Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

The purpose of traffic laws is to keep drivers safe and to reduce the likelihood of property damage, personal injury, or death. However, accidents do happen, especially in crowded cities like Sacramento. Whether you’re a driver, passenger, pedestrian, or property owner, such incidents can be traumatic.

Pedestrians have died at a disproportionately high rate in traffic accidents over the last three decades. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States increased by 27%, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%.

It’s also more convenient to leave the scene of a pedestrian accident by walking away. It’s a crime in and of itself to flee the scene of an accident. Sadly, hit-and-runs still happen daily in the United States. The circumstances in which most pedestrian accidents occur leave pedestrians completely defenseless and vulnerable.

A hit-and-run accident occurs in the United States every minute, sadly. A total of 2,049 people died as a result of hit-and-run accidents in the United States in 2016. There were approximately 682,000 hit-and-runs in the United States in a given year. Hit-and-run drivers frequently strike pedestrians and flee the scene of the crime.

When a loved one dies unexpectedly, it can have a devastating effect on their family. If they’re left vulnerable, insurance companies and other parties can take advantage of them. To avoid this, you’ll need a lawyer on your side, fighting for your interests.

The victim’s family is encouraged to file a wrongful death lawsuit with the help of an attorney while the investigation is still ongoing. Wrongful death claims allow the surviving family members of the deceased victim to sue for damages (such as lost wages and companionship, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress) that the fatal accident has caused.
