Big Rig Accident Statistics

A big rig is a large truck that goes under various names, such as 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, and dump trucks. Big rigs are involved in some of the deadliest accidents on our roads and highways. Accidents involving big rigs are more dangerous and fatal than other traffic collisions due to the enormous difference between big rigs and other vehicles on the road.

According to data from the United States Department of Transportation, nearly 4,000 people were killed in tractor-trailer accidents in the United States in 2015. From 2009 to 2015, the number of semi-truck accident fatalities increased by a whopping 22%. In 2015, a tractor-trailer was involved in 11% of all traffic fatalities.

Truck loss of control, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue are the most common causes of tractor-trailer crashes. Unfortunately, one out of every three commercial truck drivers has mild to severe sleep apnea, which impairs their attentiveness and performance.
