An unidentified pedestrian was killed after getting struck by multiple vehicles on a freeway in Ontario on Sunday night, September 27.
The deadly pedestrian accident happened at approximately 11:07 p.m. on the Interstate 10 Freeway, just east of Haven Avenue. The unidentified male victim was walking in the traffic lanes on eastbound Interstate 10 when he was suddenly struck by a passing vehicle. He was then struck by several other vehicles across all the lanes of the interstate.
Authorities determined that the vehicles that hit the victim following the first one were unable to avoid the body. The total number of vehicles involved in the accident is currently unclear. The victim was then pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are currently investigating the possible factors that caused the crash. Witnesses that can provide additional information about the accident are encouraged to contact the CHP Rancho Cucamonga office (909) 980-3994.
Pedestrians are more vulnerable to the dangers on the road in comparison to passengers in a private vehicle. Passengers of private cars are protected by seatbelts and airbags, decreasing the fatality rate of an accident while pedestrians are not as protected from the dangers on the road. Pedestrians currently make up a large percentage of traffic fatalities in the past 33 years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 27 percent from 2007-2016 while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14 percent.
