A multi-vehicle traffic collision at an intersection in Clairemont caused one person’s death and injured three other people.
According to the local authorities’ initial reports, the fatal accident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21st near the intersection of Marlesta Drive and Genesee Avenue. A small SUV heading southbound on Genesee Avenue crossed over the center line and crashed head-on into a silver northbound car.
The two vehicles then drifted and later crashed into a white car, crushing a silver car. The SUV rolled over due to the severity of the impact. Two people were reportedly trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders had to extricate them from their vehicles.
The driver of the silver vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people sustained significant injuries and were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital to receive treatment.
Multi-vehicle Collision Investigation is Underway
Local authorities are currently attempting to determine the cause of the accident through the official investigation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics, there were 3,304 fatal car accidents in California in 2017. Although head-on collisions only represent 2 percent of accidents, they account for 10 percent of fatalities on U.S. roadways. These types of accidents are caused by various reasons, such as distracted driving, drunk driving, and driver over-fatigue.
