Pedestrian Accident Statistics
When it comes to traffic accidents, pedestrians are unique because they have no means of protection from oncoming vehicles. Car passengers are protected by safety features such as seat belts and airbags. On the other hand, pedestrians are completely defenseless and vulnerable to harm if they’re struck by a passing vehicle.
Pedestrian accidents in the U.S. are becoming increasingly problematic. Governors Highway Safety Administration estimates that 6,227 pedestrians died on U.S. roads in 2018. Over time, there has been an increase in the number of pedestrians killed or seriously injured on San Diego streets.
As a result of the increasing number of people choosing to walk to and from work, school, shopping, entertainment, and exercise, pedestrian accidents have increased dramatically. A pedestrian accident has a higher chance of severe injury or death than any other type of accident. According to San Diego County statistics, 2018 was the deadliest year for pedestrians in nine years, killing over 100 people, with 15 killed in hit-and-runs.
