Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents are among the most fatal types of traffic accidents. This is primarily because pedestrians are extremely vulnerable to fatal injuries. After all, they lack any form of protection in the event of an accident. Pedestrian fatalities in the United States increased by 27% between 2007 and 2016, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%.
Statistics show that in comparison to other states, California is particularly dangerous for pedestrians. In 2018 alone, 893 pedestrians were killed while 14,000 pedestrians were injured on California roadways. Some common reasons for pedestrian accidents are negligent driving, speeding, and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians.
