One unidentified pedestrian was killed after getting struck by a hit-and-run driver on an interstate near Fallbrook on Friday morning, May 28.
The fatal accident took place on the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Old Highway 395 near Fallbrook. A southbound white semi-truck struck the pedestrian on Interstate 15 for unclear reasons.
The driver did not stop to offer help and fled the scene. Emergency personnel later arrived at the scene and found the victim lying on the right side of the interstate.
Despite the emergency personnel’s life-saving efforts, the victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been disclosed.
Authorities suspect that the truck may have sustained major damage on its right side following the mishap. The suspect’s identity and whereabouts are currently unknown.
Local authorities are actively pursuing the hit-and-run driver. Witnesses that can provide additional information about the accident are encouraged to contact the CHP Oceanside Area Investigations Unit at 760-643-3400.
Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident
It is apparent in this case that the liability falls on the hit-and-run driver for leaving the victim wounded and fleeing the scene. The suspect will most likely face criminal charges once caught.
Unfortunately, around one in five pedestrian accidents are caused by hit-and-run drivers. Sixty percent of people killed in hit-and-run accidents are pedestrians. Pedestrians are completely defenseless and vulnerable in the event of someone else’s negligence in the circumstances in which most pedestrian accidents occur.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 27 percent from 2007-2016, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14 percent. Common reasons why hit-and-run drivers flee the scene are intoxication, driving without a license, and fear of getting arrested if they remain.
San Diego County Wrongful Death Attorney for Victims of Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accidents
The sudden death of a loved one can be quite devastating for the victim’s family. It may leave them vulnerable to manipulation by both insurance companies and other parties. To avoid this, it is necessary to have an attorney by your side to fight for your rights.
Pending the official investigation results, the victim’s family is encouraged to pursue a wrongful death claim with their attorney’s help. Through the wrongful death claim, the victim’s family can seek compensation for the damages (such as loss of income and companionship, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress) that the fatal accident has caused them.
