The speeding driver was identified as a 21-year-old man named Daniel Anthony Andrade. He was heading eastbound on Highway 154 at a dangerous speed. His Honda later crossed the double yellow lines east of the entrance to Cachuma Lake and collided head-on with a Ford.

The 40-year-old woman driving the Ford sustained severe injuries from the crash. In Santa Barbara, she was immediately transported to the Cottage Hospital to be treated for her injuries on her head, chest, and legs.

The speeding driver was also taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Head-on Crash Investigation is Underway

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause and the circumstances that led to the fatal accident. Based on the preliminary records, it is apparent that the liability falls on the speeding driver as he crossed the double line and injured the unsuspecting victim.

According to the statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 3,304 fatal car accidents in California in 2017. Although head-on collisions only represent 2 percent of accidents, they account for 10 percent of fatalities on U.S. roadways. These types of accidents are caused by a variety of reasons, such as distracted driving, drunk driving, and driver over-fatigue.
