Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle accidents are increasing rapidly throughout the country. In 2017 the country had about 8.7 million registered motorcycles. In 2019 alone, approximately 5,014 people were killed in motorcycle accidents. Motorcyclists are undeniably among the most vulnerable drivers on the road. According to NHTSA, motorcycle drivers were 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to be killed in a crash than passengers.

To avoid catastrophic injuries, motorcycle riders are advised to dress appropriately and wear a helmet whenever they ride their motorcycle. Helmet use was found to be 37 percent effective in reducing motorcycle fatalities. Common causes of motorcycle accidents are distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to follow traffic laws.

Motorcyclists can also experience emotional scarring and deal with expensive property damage. Although nothing can reverse the damage incurred in a motorcycle accident, the civil courts offer injured parties a financial remedy. Immediately after a motorcycle crash, talk to an experienced injury attorney.
