Big Rig Accident Statistics

Large trucks are 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, dump trucks, and semis called “big rigs.” The number of semi-trucks on our highways and byways is increasing in tandem with rising consumer demand. Accidents involving big rigs are more dangerous and deadly than other traffic collisions because of the enormous difference between them and other vehicles on the road.

Big rigs are the primary mode of freight transportation in California, according to the state’s Department of Transportation. More than 78% of Californians rely solely on large trucks to transport their goods. In turn, accidents involving big rigs are not uncommon.

According to the NHTSA, the number of traffic fatalities involving a big rig rose steadily between 2013 and 2017. This means that the number of Californians killed in truck-related crashes will increase with the state’s burgeoning trucking industry.
