Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
Riding a bicycle on the road can be hazardous and, in some cases, fatal, especially in congested areas. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities.
Statistics show that California leads the nation in the number of bicycling crash deaths per year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 455 cyclists in California died from 2016 to 2018. The majority of these crashes occur in urban areas, where cars and bicycles interact most often.
Cars colliding with bicycles are the leading cause of bicyclist injuries and deaths in California. In many of these incidents, the driver failed to yield the right of way, failed to check for bikes before pulling out, ran a stop sign or red light, or was otherwise distracted while driving. As a bicyclist in California, you must use prudence and common sense while navigating the roadways. Do not assume cars will stop for you or yield the right of way. Practice defensive cycling to help reduce your risk of a collision.
