DUI Crash Statistics

Everyone is entitled to travel safely on the road. Drunk drivers put the lives of innocent people — as well as their own — in grave danger. There is still a long way to go to reduce the number of people who drink and drive in California and across the country.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost 10,000 individuals are killed each year in DUI crashes (NHTSA). According to the CDC, alcohol and drugs are involved in around 18% of fatal automobile accidents.

The NHTSA estimates that around 30 Americans lose their lives every day due to drunk driving accidents. About 29% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States are the result of drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 60% of these drivers have a BAC over the legal limit.

When drivers are under the influence of alcohol, they are considerably more likely to be involved in car wrecks that result in serious injuries—driving when intoxicated increases the risk of careless or risky behavior. Many DUI-related incidents include drivers who are speeding when they are impaired by alcohol.
