Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

An estimated 7,485 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers in 2021, the highest number in four decades, according to a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

In 2020, speeding contributed 8.6% of pedestrian fatalities, an increase from 7.2% in the previous year. Speed plays a vital role in pedestrian safety. A pedestrian’s death risk exponentially increases with the vehicle’s speed, from 10% at 23 miles per hour (mph) to 90% at 58 mph.

When a car strikes a pedestrian, the injuries are almost always severe. They will be the majority of those hurt when a vehicle collides with a group of pedestrians.

One of the leading causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries is failing to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly.

It is recommended that pedestrians use sidewalks whenever possible, refrain from using drugs or alcohol while walking, and use caution when crossing parking lots or driveways. As a result, their chances of being injured in these collisions will be reduced.
