[02-11-2024] Sacramento County, CA – 8-Year-Old Boy Killed, 9-Year-Old Girl Injured After Being Struck by Vehicle Along Highway 50

An 8-year-old boy was killed, while his sister, a 9-year-old girl, was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in Sacramento on Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2024.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly collision happened at around 4:35 p.m. in a construction zone along westbound Highway 50, east of 65th Street.

The mother of the two victims, who was driving a black Toyota, pulled over in a nearby construction zone to ask for help when one of her tires blew out.

Afraid that someone from the freeway might hit her car, she decided to take her kids out of the car and into the center median while they waited.

Moments later, a Ford vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man in the fast lane approached at an unknown speed. He reportedly tried to slow down to avoid the parked Toyota but lost control and crashed into the center median instead, striking both children in the process.

Authorities said the boy died at the scene, while the girl was hospitalized with severe injuries. Their mother and the Ford driver were uninjured.

It is still unclear if the Ford driver was impaired when the collision occurred. CHP is still on the case.
