Pedestrian Accident

Greg Mohrman took on this case when almost everything seemed stacked against his client. A 13-year-old girl had just left summer school when a car struck her in a busy intersection next to her high school, knocking her unconscious. The police report blamed her, alleging she may have been crossing outside the crosswalk, and the driver’s insurer offered $6,500 on a $100,000 policy. Greg went to work at the driver’s deposition, getting him to admit that he knew students crossed there, saw them on the corner, never adjusted his driving, and should have braked sooner, while exposing three different versions of his story.

Greg then had to prove our client’s injury was real. The girl was released from the hospital the same day, and some symptoms faded, but an MRI showed scarring in her frontal cortex, and she spent years in pediatric neurology care for headaches, brain fog, and light sensitivity. Greg also used the fact that the law holds a 13-year-old to the standard of a reasonable child, not an adult, to blunt the defense’s efforts to blame her.

This is the kind of case many lawyers would walk away from: a police report blaming a child, a small insurance policy, and an insulting $6,500 offer. For Greg, those were the reasons to fight harder. Brain Injury & Trauma

On July 7, 2019, crowds flooded East Los Angeles after Mexico beat the United States in a championship soccer match, and sheriff's deputies took control of a busy intersection on Whittier Boulevard. As our clients, two cousins, crossed on a “Walk” signal, a deputy waved a driver through a red light, and the car struck both girls.

Greg Mohrman built the case around how deputies ran the intersection: patrol cars parked where they blocked everyone’s view, signals were never set to flashing red, and no one was in charge. The sergeant beside the crosswalk admitted she would have stopped the girls had she seen them sooner. The County never offered a dollar and, in response to a $3.75 million demand, spent four years trying to shift the blame.

Greg’s biggest challenge was the client’s brain injury, which was classified as mild and did not show up on imaging. Yet, it followed her through high school, required two months of live-in rehabilitation, and is expected to lead to early-onset dementia. Greg showed the jury what the crash took from a girl about to start high school, along with her broken leg and the other client’s lasting trauma. After 90 minutes of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous $17.9 million verdict.

Commercial Truck Accident

A family was driving to a concert when a commercial truck veered across several lanes of Interstate 15 and slammed into them, sending their car spinning at freeway speed. An independent witness placed the blame squarely on the truck driver, who offered only excuses that he never told the investigating officer. The client's back injury required spine surgery at two levels, his daughter left her out-of-state university, and his wife watched it all happen.

Greg Mohrman’s team picked up the case just four months before trial. Greg tried the case with Jesus Becerra against a defense that used every argument available: low property damage, lien-based treatment, a one-year gap in treatment, and a low offer before trial. The truck driver admitted negligence before the case went to the jury, but when the judge excluded a key piece of evidence mid-trial, Greg persuaded the court to reverse the ruling. In closing, the defense asked the jury to award our client nothing. After a two-week trial, the jury awarded the family $895,000.
