Fatal Car Crash Statistics

Some of California’s most dangerous motor vehicle accidents are single-vehicle accidents, but many drivers are unaware of this.

Sixty-two percent of all fatal car accidents in California involve only one vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As a result of California’s high number of single-vehicle accidents, drivers must be aware of all of the various factors that contribute.

A number of factors can cause an accident involving only one vehicle. A run-off-the-road accident occurs when a driver loses control while speeding or making sharp turns on a wet, slippery road. It is possible to find debris on the road, such as a large branch or an object that fell from a truck.

In the event of a single-car accident caused by something other than your or another driver’s negligence, such as a deer jumping in front of your vehicle, the comprehensive coverage plan of your insurance policy will likely limit your recovery.

San Mateo County Car Accident Lawyers

Many people involved in car accidents are unable to return to work or school because of their injuries. Negligent drivers are not exonerated from responsibility even if a victim dies as a result of their actions. Victim’s family members can file wrongful death lawsuits against the negligent driver who caused their loved one’s death (or legal heirs).

For them, the process of reliving their losses and grief is a painful one. In depositions and trials, victims must testify about their losses in front of strangers. One’s mental health can take a significant toll on one’s ability to get a case settled.

It is critical to hold negligent drivers accountable if they cause an accident. Accountability is critical when a high death toll is caused by negligence. For grieving families, filing a wrongful death claim can be draining, but it can also bring some solace. This is good news for everyone who drives in California.
