Fatal Speeding Accident Statistics

Speed is frequently a major factor in fatal car accidents. The severity of injuries sustained in any car accident increases with speed. Even if you survive your injuries, they will be more serious if the incident was caused by high speed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately ten thousand people were killed in auto accidents related to speeding in the United States in 2018. Speeding was a role in 26 percent of all road fatalities in 2017.

Speeding is a major cause of car accidents not only in California but throughout the United States. Accident deaths in California have increased by 23.5 percent since 2013, accounting for 11 percent of all auto-related deaths in the country. On average, 925 individuals are killed as a result of speeding.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, excessive speed was a factor in one-third of all fatal traffic accidents.

This statistic means that speeding killed more than one out of every four car accident victims. But why is speeding so dangerous? The answer is straightforward physics.

When a vehicle collides with another object, the greater the force it generates. Forces created in a collision must have a place to go.

Although passenger vehicles are designed to absorb as much energy as possible, no system can completely divert all forces away from passengers. The greater the impact force, the more severe the victim’s injuries are likely to be.
