Bicycles are considered vehicles under California law. Motorists and cyclists must follow the same set of traffic rules in order to avoid collisions. When they see a red light, they must stop and ride straight.

Cycling and other modes of transportation are subject to the same rules as cars. They can ride in the street when there isn’t a designated bike lane. When cyclists ride too closely to the road, motorists often ignore them or try to pass them.

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) reported that a total of 840 cyclists were killed by cars in 2016, accounting for 2 percent of all traffic deaths.

Every year, California suffers the greatest number of fatalities due to bicycle accidents. There were more than 400 deaths of cyclists in California between 2016 and 2018.

It is important that riders wear helmets, maintain their tires and brakes, and keep their bodies proportional to the size of their bikes.
