Rollover Crash Statistics

A car will flip onto its side or top in a rollover collision. Rollover accidents account for a disproportionate share of collision fatalities.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rollovers account for about 3 percent of all car accidents. Thirty-five percent of all passenger vehicle fatalities are caused by a rollover or tip-over accident, but whether it’s just one car or a convoy, going too fast is the leading cause of rollover accidents. When two vehicles collide at high speeds, the results are almost always disastrous.

Even if you’re the most cautious driver on the road, a rollover accident is always possible. Don’t panic in the midst of a rollover; doing so can cause you to lose control of the vehicle by tilting it too far in the opposite direction.

If everything goes as planned, your car will right itself. Only when the vehicle has come to a complete stop should you attempt to exit.
